About the business
I manage a four-floor office building with fourteen doors going onto access control.
The problem
I wanted every door done at once. The installer suggested testing on one door first.
It felt slower. But I'd seen one mistake copied across a whole building before.
What we did
We picked a typical staff entrance: real daily use, a working fallback key, and no fire-exit complications. About ten users from different tenants enrolled.
We tested:
- Normal entry
- A wrong credential
- An expired credential
- A lost credential, cancelled
- Cutting the power, then the network
We checked the log showed who, which door, when, and whether entry was allowed or refused. Then we asked people what annoyed them.
The result
The pilot turned up three small problems:
- The reader was too sensitive next to the glass.
- The schedule rules were too simple for shift workers.
- Nobody owned the lost-credential process.
Each was cheap to fix on one door. On fourteen, it would have been fourteen times the trouble.
I can't give you a number for time saved. But the surprises were smaller, and earlier.
Before the pilot, survey every door so you pick the right one to test.
