About the business
I run a professional services office with twelve doors we wanted off metal keys.
The problem
Three installers gave me three quotes in three formats. I couldn't compare them.
Each had walked the building quickly. One hadn't noticed that a door was an exit route. Another missed a glass door with no frame for a lock strike. Complex doors are one of the top five problems integrators report, so I wasn't the first.
What we did
I made a sheet with one line per door:
- Door and frame type
- Current lock
- Who uses it, and what's behind it
- Whether it's an exit route
- Where the cable would run
- Where power and network are
- What the door should do in a power cut
We walked every door with it. The exit doors went to the local fire authority to confirm. Then I sent the same sheet to all three installers.
The result
The quotes came back in the same shape. I could see which installer had priced the glass door and which had left it out. The surprises came out before we signed, not after.
Download the door survey sheet (CSV), one line per door, ready for Excel or Google Sheets.
Once you have the quotes, here's how to read one line by line.
Filled in the survey sheet and still getting quotes you can't compare? Send us your door list. We'll help you get every installer quoting the same job.
