About the business
I run a 25-person parts distribution office. Our stock room holds high-value items, and I wanted a palm vein scanner on its door.
The problem
The seller quoted a very small error rate. I asked for the test report.
He didn't have one.
Then I read that the UK's National Cyber Security Centre says independent testing of vein recognition is scarce. The one public spoofing test I could find covered a single product, at the easiest level. I wasn't going to pay for a number nobody could check.
What we did
We asked our integrator to trial the scanner on that one door. Ten staff enrolled, including two who handle dusty cartons all day. Everyone signed a written consent form, and anyone who preferred could use a card. We logged every failed read.
The result
I judged the scanner on my own people at my own door, not on a sales line. We bought it for the stock room only. Every other door stays on cards, because a card is enough there.
