SEO gets you ranked. AEO decides whether the answer engine quotes you.

Ranking on page one and being the source an AI answer cites are related problems, but they are not the same problem.

    SEO & AEO6 min read

A client asked us recently why they still show up first for a query in a normal search but get left out of the AI-generated summary at the top of the same page. It is a fair question, and the answer is the clearest way we know to explain what AEO actually is.

    Two surfaces, one foundation

Search Engine Optimization improves how your site appears in a list of blue links. The engine ranks pages; you try to be near the top.

Answer Engine Optimization improves the odds that your expertise is understood, selected, and quoted when a system generates an answer instead of a list. That happens in AI overviews, in assistants, and increasingly inside search itself.

These are different surfaces, but they run on the same foundation:

    • A site that can actually be crawled and parsed
    • Clear information architecture and internal linking
    • Content that states the answer plainly instead of burying it under 400 words of preamble
    • Credible, consistent signals that you are a real authority on the topic

If any of those is weak, both surfaces suffer. Fix them and you improve your position in the list and your chances of being the cited source.

Where AEO asks for something extra

A few things matter more when a machine is assembling an answer than when a human is scanning results.

Answer-first structure. Lead with the direct answer, then explain. A question as a heading followed immediately by a two-sentence answer is easy to extract. A clever headline followed by a story is not.

Definitions and scope. Say what a term means, who it applies to, and where it does not. Hedged, vague writing is hard to quote confidently.

Evidence close to the claim. A statistic, a worked example, or a comparison next to the sentence it supports. Machines and people both trust content more when the support is visible.

Entity clarity. Consistent naming, schema where it helps, and content that makes it obvious what your company is, what it does, and what it is known for.

    What AEO is not

It is not a separate retainer with "AI" in the name. It is not a schema plugin you install once. And it is not something you can measure perfectly. Where platforms expose AI-answer presence we track it, and where they do not, we say so rather than invent a number.

    How we run it

We treat SEO and AEO as one program. The baseline audit looks at technical health, topic coverage, and where AI answers currently pull from. The content plan is built to be useful to a person and structured enough for a machine. Reporting ties visibility back to leads, not just to a position in a list.

If you rank well but keep getting left out of the answer, the gap is usually structure and authority, not effort.
